Director’s note

I was born in Kotor in 1970. My mother studied in Dubrovnik and did an internship in Boka Bay. My father returned to his family after graduating from college in Belgrade and got a job. A Croatian and a Montenegrin fell in love. I can say, without fear of a cliché, that I am a child of love. When I was a year old, they separated. It always seemed to me that they never got over it. Neither did I. My mother took me as a baby to her family in the northern Adriatic. That was when I first crossed Debeli Brijeg. For the next twenty years, I crossed that hill constantly. Hundreds of times. As I grew older, more and more often. For me, that hill has always been a place of longing, meeting and connecting. And Dubrovnik along with it. When the army crossed Debeli Brijeg in 1991 and launched an attack on Dubrovnik, I couldn’t believe it was happening. I still can’t today. And that’s it. Today, thirty-three years later, I am making a play about those events. Because I want to understand in order to believe. And above all, because I know that Debeli Brijeg is a place of union and love. And I want to share that. It is the only way out.
