She was a great actress, engaging artist and irresistible movie star. Marlene Dietrich marked the 20th century in many ways. Born at the beginning of the century in 1901 in Berlin, she died at the very end of the century in 1992 in Paris. Her life was all about art and resistance. At the age of 11, she changed her name from Marija Magdalena to Marlene. She studied violin and was interested in theater as a teenager. In 1923, she acted in her first film, a year later she gave birth to a daughter. During the 1920s, she played in theaters in Berlin and Vienna, both in classical plays and musicals, as well as in films. “Blue Angel” (1930) launched an international film and singing career here. She worked in Hollywood in Josef von Sternberg’s films in the early 1930s, starring alongside Garry Cooper and Cary Grant, the biggest Hollywood stars of the time. These films created Marlene’s image of mysterious fatal fame, which remained her signature look for the rest of her life. Dietrich became one of the highest paid movie stars at the time.
